TRIENNIAL OF PORTRAIT is an international festival event that took place at LGPMB in 1985 and 1988 under the name of the Triennial of Portrait Creation. The aim of the exhibition is to observe and present works of art with the theme of portrait—not only to varying degrees of psychological depiction of the face, but also a political portrait of the landscape and history, a metaphorical portrait of a community, institutions through their executives, etc.

The structure of the exhibition consists of a monographic exhibition of the guest artist, an international curated thematic exhibition and an open call. The event takes place every three years.

The venue of the Triennial of Portrait is the Liptov Gallery of Peter Michal Bohúň in Liptovský Mikuláš.

The Liptov Gallery of Peter Michal Bohúň in Liptovský Mikuláš is the third oldest public collection gallery in Slovakia (since 1955).

It has one of the largest exhibition spaces and extensive picture galleries focused on the history of fine arts in Slovakia from Gothic to the present. The high quality of the collection, which focuses on modern art in the first half of the 20th century, was marked by the fact that the gallery was initiated by the painter Janko Alexy and was originally planned as the “northern” branch of the Slovak National Gallery. The high standard of its more than sixty years of activity is related to the constant presence of important personalities who come from Liptov, or who have worked here due to the attractiveness or “photogenicity” of the environment. (Palugyai, Fulla, Sokol, Martinček, Šimerová-Martinčeková, Čemický, B. Hoffstädter, Kern, Adamčiak, Cyprich, J. Hoffstädter, Papčo, Podmanická, Hládeková, Jarotta, Ďurina and others.)

We build the current mission of the gallery on the traditions of Slovak modern art, and current forms of scientific elaboration will be one of our priorities, and on bridging modern traditions with current culture. We also consider part of the gallery’s rich history to be its own events, which we want to commemorate from time to time, including those that have not been fully fulfilled—as is the case of the once ideologized Triennial of Portrait Creation.
